Six weeks ago, 12 inmates were hired to unload expired bread and toss the goods into compactors, where it is recycled and made into livestock feed. Still secured inside tall fences topped with barbed wire but away from everything except a dirt road leading to the cell facilities, the inmates do their work on a cement platform that will eventually include a recycling plant. "Right now, the bread goes to another recycling plant," said inmate Joseph Lopez as he pulled a loaf from a rack filled with nearly 300 pounds of bread. Eight to 10 trucks deliver the goods during the day, with each truck averaging 42 racks of assorted breads and pastries. "Eventually they'll have conveyor belts where a machine will separate plastic from the product," he said. Joe Borges, owner of Earthwise Recycling Corp., has been in the business of purchasing and recycling day-old or imperfect bread for many years. He said he is excited to bring his Texas-based business to his hometown of Chino. Borges said that when he brought Earthwise to Southern California a year ago, the workforce was short and that not enough people responded to his employment needs. Daniel Polanco, president of Local 37, said the grievance was filed on Feb. 11, based on the loss of hours by bakery employees due to the work being sent to CIM. Wonder Bread could not be reached for comment. CIM spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove said this is the prison's third joint-venture program since 2000, when previously a nursery and waste-recycling company provided inmate jobs. But in order to even apply for a position, the inmates must meet certain criteria. "They can't have any violent offenses ... and nobody with a sexual offense, including indecent exposure, can apply for a gate pass," he said. There are 2,700 inmates who meet the criteria, he said. Well put Tom. Check it out. The only reason our products are making it on the trucks is because of the 2 union foremen. Look at how much time they spend in the office upstairs. They are doing the Shipping managers job for them. So really, what do you think will happen next? All I know is that overtime is going through the ceiling for the few foremen in transport, shipping and drivers. The drivers are getting o.t. due to the fact that drivers are needed and the managers are not hiring any. But really how much of it is the managers fault. I think a large amount of the blame lies on the people who hired them. These managers were never trained by someone with knowledge. There is no process for managers or foremen to be trained. And furthermore they only get trained to do the tasks that the other superiors don't want to do. The superiors are to busy protecting their own ass.

Maybe it's just me but how can the powers to be in Distribution make decisions beneficial to the company and all involved if they've never worked in the bakery? There is no way to possibly understand run rates, lbs per hour, cripple logging, rack, tray, basket, corrigated consumption if they've never actually done the job, hands on. These clowns we have in charge just see numbers and shuffle paperwork and rely on the useless foremen to carry them. Hell, they can't even make out a work schedule! They have a union guy making out the schedule every week. We have people stumbling over each other, foremen pilfering company time and people walking out with produce. I saw the guy in the thrift store two weeks ago loading up his tan Saturn with boxes of product. As he was doing it, he was looking around acting guilty as hell. It was at closing time and all other help had gone home. No wonder this company is going in to Chapter 7 BK. It's just a matter of time now. This guy Jung hung low will shut down plants, go to distributorships in routes and chop a few head along the way all while he takes his millions to the bank. The end result will be the same though. At one time with the Wonder and Hostess brands this company (CBC) was well managed with individuals that were forward thinking and cared for everyone that worked for them. Since the departure of CBC to IBC this company has fallen into the deadly trap of over extension and promoting personnal that should not be promoted. The days of the Faccenda's, Surowick, Signore, Colgan, Vesterby, Angst (before IBC), Walters, Brown, Pierce and many others are for the most part gone now. It's really to bad that IBC continues to have in Management people like Kafoure (that didnt make it at the old Earthgrains), Bob Morgan (that did not make at Dolly or Earthgrains), Smith (that has destroyed everything he touches), Willson (who has no clue) and many others now running this company. What Sullivan, Coffey and other did to this company is a shame and we all are paying for their greed and total mismanagement of this company.

Info about selling company is partially true, any profit center that is not making $ will go to distributorship , which they have already been doing, or they will close down bread bakeries and concentrate on cake. It is not likely the company will be bought or closed down but not impossible. another area they are pursuing is drop ship business, any one who got a union contract in the last 2 years saw the language allowing for drop ship of certain items. They have really grown in this area lately. mostly small stores now but kroger and wal-mart in near future. Because whether you are black, brown, red, yellow or white, young or old, male or female, on crutches, or in a wheelchair, you are in danger of being discriminated against. More Than Special Interests "We're not just talking about special interests," notes Paul Igasaki, who served eight years as vice chair of the EEOC. "We're all protected in some way." The EEOC receives 80,000 private-sector charges annually. Initially, after its establishment in 1964, it focused on discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Age discrimination was added in 1967; disabilities in 1990. Since that time, workers and employers have learned that discrimination works in subtle, insidious ways. Take age discrimination. As the workforce ages, people who never thought they needed protection are turning to the EEOC. A man who worked for a company for decades may be deemed "too expensive"; managers might attempt to force him out by cutting back on his assignments, or passing his clients to someone new. Or take disability. A woman who has experienced a physical or psychological trauma may be assumed to be unable to return to work, although she is fully capable of functioning. Perhaps she only needs something as simple as a telephone device or a ramp in order to perform her role as she did before the trauma. When You Might Need Them The EEOC offers plenty of advice for employees who feel they have been discriminated against (start here). Documenting every incident of alleged discrimination is important. Of course, it is far easier for the agency to act when there is a pattern of discrimination. "If all of a sudden everyone over age 40 is terminated, or every woman in a department says she is harassed, that's where you'll see the EEOC really take action," says Jim Bertoluzzi, a human resources representative at Tauck World Discovery, the international travel company. Bertoluzzi applauds the organization's work. "They provide guidelines to keep employers focused, and the result is good for business. They help ensure we hire a diverse work group, and that helps any business deliver results," he says. "From an HR standpoint, we know our hiring practices must be consistent, the same for all applicants. If the EEOC comes in, we have to show we asked every applicant the same questions, and based on their answers we called three of them back. In Cincy we are short 5 drivers before vacations. Drivers are running everywhere not just bid runs working days off running out of hours then calling off

Does any other bakery in the country have this problem?............Transport vacation bids have been out for 3 mos. Transport bids for 6 weeks and all is not done yet. It sounds like a leadership problem? Someone needs to look at the situation and FIX IT!!!!!!!

It is truly amazing how much information you learn about the social drinkers over at Desperadoes. One social drinking good ole boy was there every weekend with his buddy from the garage and he signed everybody's paychecks back in the nineties. He even saw "workers" out there that were 200 miles away on vacation hanging out while he was visiting the water hole and went around saying they were stepping out. The food manufacturing industry is 30 yrs behind in employee relations you have people that are promoted from withing which is fine but there is no mentoring or training at any level then what happens is human nature takes over the the ill trained and uneducated and you have a Glendale

BECAUSE they have always had mgt. that did that . It is one of the most mismanged companies as far as EEOC policies go. This is the honest to G's truth. I was in mgt. and sales. It truly is a joke in HR because they do not have / or follow a general handbook unless all else fails . I have worked for enough companies that I have to say they are last on the list for employee relations. Their benefits were great , but look at Walgreens , they were recently slapped with a fine for not promoting minorities properly. I know this first hand because we had them as a client. They put minority mgrs. in bad parts of town regardless of how good of a mgr. they are. I am caucausian and do not like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton , but this case had merit enough for the courts to hear. Although, this happens to mgrs. in the grocery industry all the time.
